March Madness (American College Basketball)

The NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Championship is a elimination tournament which is held each March in the United States. The tournament features 65 college basketball teams, both conference champions and at-large selections. The tournament is organized by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The tournament is held in March, it is informally known as March Madness. The national semifinals (the Final Four) have become one of the nation's most prominent sporting events.

The tournament bracket has included conference tournament champions from each Division I conference, which receive automatic bids. The rest of the slots are at-large, with teams chosen by an NCAA selection committee team. The selection process and tournament seedings are based on many factors which include team rankings, win-loss records and RPI data. Since the great expansion of the tournament to 65 teams back in 2001, the two lowest-seeded teams compete in the opening round game which determines who will join the other 63 teams in the first round of the national college basketball tournament. The opening round game is played in University of Dayton Arena in Dayton, Ohio each year and is watched by many basketball fans.

The winners of each region will advance to the Final Four, where the national semifinals are played on Saturday and the national championship is played on Monday. Many college basketball athletes who compete in the tournament will go onto the draft selection process and end up in professional teams. For this reason the college basketball system has become the top breeding ground for producing the best upcoming stars of the NBA. It's no wonder why college basketball scholarships are wanted by many basketball athletes who aspire to become the next big thing.
